Raw authenticity and multifaceted talent define the emerging voice of Alexander Oswald Mowbray, known professionally as Lecky, in the Australian hip-hop scene. This independent rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer is forging a unique path in the industry. With Australian and Fijian roots, Lecky’s journey from a challenging childhood to musical success is as captivating as his artistry. We had the opportunity to sit down with this rising artist to explore his origins, creative process, and future aspirations.
Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us about how you got into music?
My journey into music is pretty intertwined with my life story. I faced some early challenges, including my father’s incarceration and being placed in a permanent home by the Department of Human Services. Music became my escape and my voice. It all started when my brother taught me to play the guitar. From there, I just couldn’t stop. I was writing raps in my notebook by the age of 7, and by 14, I was making beats. On July 4th, 2020, at 16, I produced my first single. That’s when things really kicked off for me.
Your music is known for its authenticity. Can you describe your creative process?
I’m all about keeping it real. Every track I make is a piece of my life. As an independent artist, I do it all – producing, mixing, mastering, writing, and performing. My process usually starts with composing an instrumental, and then I freestyle over it. Sometimes a track comes together in less than 20 minutes, other times it can take weeks. It’s all about capturing the right feeling and story.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?
It’s a blend of rap and R&B, all mixed and mastered by yours truly. I pour my experiences into every track, so listeners get a real slice of my life and perspective.
You’ve had some success with your recent albums. Can you tell us about that?
Yeah, it’s been an exciting journey. My second studio album, ‘Lovers 2 Enemies’, dropped in November 2023 through my label, LeckyENT. It did pretty well, with singles like “Love & Lust,” “Goku,” and “Volkanovski” getting some good attention. Then in February 2024, I released ‘Enemies 2 Lovers’, which has 16 tracks including some fan favorites like ‘Secrets’ and ‘Sea of Emotion’.
What’s next for Lecky?
I’m working on a new album called ‘Always & Forever Vol. 1’. It’s set to release on my birthday, November 8th, 2024. I’m really excited about it because I feel like I’m constantly evolving as an artist, and each new release represents a new peak for me.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
For a verse, I’d love to work with 50 Cent. For production, Scott Storch would be amazing. But if I could do both with someone, it’d have to be Pharrell.
Lastly, what message would you like to get across to your fans and potential listeners?
I just want people to enjoy the music as much as possible. I’m dedicated to growing as an artist and improving with every release. I hope listeners can come along on this journey with me and connect with the stories I’m telling through my music.
